Is stock photography worth the work?

Stock can produce income. The difficult part is whether royalties justify making, preparing, describing and managing the images.

Stock photography is called passive income because a photograph can license while the photographer sleeps. That description begins after most of the work has been hidden.

The shutter is only the first step Releases, metadata, upload and measurement are part of the stock-photography workload.

What is being sold?

The photographer normally retains ownership and licenses permitted uses. One image may license repeatedly, but any individual photograph may earn very little or nothing.

The current economics are modest

Adobe Stock states a 33% royalty for standard photos, vectors and illustrations. For large-subscription standard-image licences, Adobe lists minimum royalties beginning at US$0.33. Its payout threshold is US$25, with at least 45 days since the first sale before requesting the first payout.

Shutterstock states that contributors move through six annual levels, ranging from 15% to 40% of the licence price, resetting to level one on 1 January each year.

The useful photograph is not always the beautiful one

Buyers need clear concepts, copy space, ordinary situations and consistent variations. A personal favourite may have little commercial demand.

Keywording is part of the product

Good metadata describes the literal subject, useful concept and setting without becoming inaccurate spam.

Releases can decide whether a photograph is usable

Adobe requires model releases for identifiable people and property releases where recognisable private property, artwork or protected locations require permission.

Stock photography is a small licensing and metadata business attached to photography.

AI has changed supply

Adobe accepts generative-AI content when rights, quality and labelling requirements are met. Authentic access and believable real detail may become more valuable, but competition is larger.

Verdict

Treat stock as a controlled experiment. Upload a defined batch, record every hour and acceptance, then review actual licences and income after a fixed period. Continue only when evidence justifies the work.
