Review status
This is a research-led review, not a hands-on test. Specifications and availability were checked against Canon UK on 30 July 2026.
The EOS R100 is Canon’s deliberately simple entry point into RF mirrorless. It can make strong photographs. The question is whether the saving is worth the controls and features left behind.
What Canon is still selling
Canon UK lists a 24.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, Dual Pixel autofocus, face and eye detection, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, up to 6.5 fps with One Shot autofocus and up to 3.5 fps with Servo autofocus.
The EOS R50 changes the comparison
Canon lists the EOS R50 with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, newer Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, subject detection, faster 12/15 fps shooting, a vari-angle touchscreen and oversampled 4K video.
Who the R100 still suits
- A stills-first beginner buying at a meaningful discount.
- Somebody who prefers simplicity and rarely needs unusual screen angles.
- A family photographer moving from a phone.
Who should stretch to the R50
- Anybody photographing fast or unpredictable dogs regularly.
- People who value a touchscreen and flexible screen.
- Video users and beginners likely to keep the camera for years.
A cheap camera is poor value when missing convenience makes the phone easier.
Verdict
The R100 is not obsolete. Buy it when the saving is substantial and its missing speed and convenience do not matter. Otherwise the R50 is the more convincing long-term beginner camera.
